How to Avoid Hangovers

You can learn tips for how to prevent a hangover which gives you a real chance to avoid the worst symptoms of being hung over the next morning.

There are physiological reasons why people who have a little too much to drink pay for it the next day. If you can take steps to help your body deal with the physical problems that come with over-drinking, you can avoid the worst hangovers.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking plenty of water is where hangover prevention begins. When you drink, the alcohol tends to dehydrate your body. When you don’t have enough water in your body, this leads to all kinds of problems. Your organs don’t function properly. Your cells don’t function at peak efficiency. Your blood pressure goes up, as the water content in your blood goes down. Your body start to retain water to conserve what little it has, which is why your face gets puffy when you drink.

But let’s go back to blood pressure for a moment. As you blood pressure goes up, your heart has to pump faster to get blood to your body’s extremities, including hands, feet, and your brain. This contributes to the pounding headaches you get, as the blood vessels in your brain have to expand to handle the additional blood flow.

Drinking water is about the healthiest thing you can do. That doesn’t change when you’re drinking alcohol.

Eat before Drinking – Hangover Tips

Food in your stomach soaks up significant amounts of alcohol. This slows down the processing of alcohol through your body. The slower you metabolize alcohol, the slower the toxins pass into your liver, and the better your liver is able to purge your body. When you get too many toxins in your liver, these impair the ability of that organ to do its job correctly.

Drink Milk before Drinking Alcohol

One reason people get nausea and upset stomach from drinking alcohol is because alcohol eats the lining of the stomach. When your stomach secretes acids to get rid of what’s filling your stomach and the walls of your stomach are damaged, this causes upset stomach and nausea, because your stomach wants to get rid of what’s irritating it. Drinking milk lines your stomach with a “base” substance. Bases are the anti-acids. When they combine with an acid, the two negate each other’s effects.

Know Your Limitations When Drinking

Drinking beyond your limitations is easy, because it’s a macho thing to try to keep up with everyone else at the table. And as you become more inebriated, your judgment becomes impaired. There’s a law of diminishing returns, when it comes to drinking alcohol. At a certain point, the enjoyment, good feelings, or “buzz” you get is not going to get any more enhanced. Instead, you begin to feel negative affects of too much alcohol, making it harder to enjoy yourself. Knowing your boundaries makes your evening better, not worse.

Drinking alcohol depletes your body of vitamin C, which is good for your blood, which not only helps your immune system, but helps your bones and muscles. “Muscles” is important, because when you don’t have enough vitamin C, your body’s muscles don’t work right, and therefore you’re more prone to aches, pains, and cramps. I might mention that water also helps your muscles function properly, so dehydration also leads to muscle pains and cramps,

Drinking Coffee and Preventing Hangover Symptoms

Many people drink coffee or some other caffeine drink when trying to fight off the effects of a hangover. The problem is that caffeine is a diuretic, and therefore dehydrates your body even further than just alcohol. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of hangovers in people, so drinking coffee might give you additional energy, but at a cost.

Replace Coffee with Ginseng – Hangover Prevention Tips

Another option is taking ginseng, another energy-increasing substance. Ginseng is used in many energy drinks, often in conjunction with caffeine or to replace caffeine. But ginseng can cause high blood pressure, insomnia, mania, diarrhea, and nausea in certain people, so you can see why this might not be the best hangover curse. If you’re never had a problem with ginseng in this way, you might consider giving it a try, though.

Hangover Chaser Pills

“Hangover chaser” is a popular over-the-counter supplement you’ll find in convencience stores. Hangover Chaser pills use “trace charcoal” and calcium carbonate to absorb something called “congeners” found in alcohol, and so they are supposed to block hangovers, if you take them before drinking, then at select periods throughout the night.

Hangover Chaser doesn’t help your hangover directly, in my opinion. Instead, the fact that the correct way of taking hangover chaser is with a glass of water makes this hangover remedy useful. If you drink water before drinking, then drink water every couple of hours through the night, this is likely to keep you hydrated, while watering down some of the worst effects of too much alcohol consumption. Do this throughout the night and it’s likely to help your later hangover.

Take Berocca Hangover Vitamins

Berocca hangover vitamins contain calcium, zinc, magnesium, and folic acid. Berocca also includes vitamins B-12, B-6, B-1, B-2, B-3, and B-5, along iwth vitamin C and vitamin H. Berocca pills is therefore like taking a solid multivitamin before drinking. Berocca does not block hangover effects or make you immune to the hangover state, but berocca might help prevent the worst effects of hangovers (if taken before drinking) and might help you recover quicker (if taken afterwards).

Think about it. When people are taken to the hospital after drinking to much (alcohol poisoning, etc), they give you an injection of Vitamin B-12. B12 help with the normal functioning of the brain, as well as your nervous system. B-12 also helps with the formation of the blood and the healthy function of every other cell in your body.

Milk Thistle Vitamins – Hangover Advice

Milk thistle vitamins helps you liver cells resist some of the toxins (ethanol) found in alcohol. Drinking alcohol builds up toxins in your liver, and your liver helps in metabolizing negative alcoholic substances, so this should help your resistance to certain effects of hangover. Whether this directly changes how you feel after over-drinking, is less certain.

Glass of Water and Aspirin – Stopping Hangovers

At the end of the night, no matter what you do, take some aspirin (or other blood thinner) and a glass of water. We’ve covered why water helps, but a blood thinner helps prevent the pounding headaches you’ll wake up with in the morning. You might think that you can handle in when you wake up, but when blood vessels in the brain become dilated to help bring more blood to the brain, even if you take a blood thinner after they’re dilated, this doesn’t mean they contract. This might cause your head to pound more, as blood flows faster through your head.

Prevention is best. When your blood is thinner, your blood vessels don’t have to dilate as much, which it’s likely to do as you try to get more blood to your extremities. Be warned, though: aspirin and other blood thinners can cause bleeding in your stomach, which can really cause you pain, when you already have an upset stomach.

Sleep Sitting Up – Avoid Hangovers

When you sleep sitting up, this forces your heart to keep pumping blood to your brain all night. When you sleep laying down, blood pools in your brain. Your blood vessels have to dilate to accomodate this excess blood, so when you wake up, you are facing those pounding headaches I talked about. Sleep sitting up in a chair and this mitigates effects of blood pooling in your brain, so this helps you prevent many of the worst effects of having a hangover.
