How to Plan a Romantic Getaway

Planning a Romantic Getaway

One of the best ways to keep a relationship healthy and happy is to treat each other to a romantic getaway every once in awhile (see: being a good husband)! These trips create memories that act as the glue to a long-lasting relationship. They relieve everyday stress that takes its toll on even the happiest of relationships and allow the couple to regroup.

What truly sets a romantic getaway apart from any other type of trip are the details. Every aspect of the getaway is designed to bring two people closer together, from the food to the fun.

Romantic Lodging

The starting point to planning a romantic vacation is choosing the best destination for you and your partner. Every couple has its own personality. Are you an adventuresome duo? Do you enjoy the simplicity of quiet nights in? Regardless of your preferences, you need to choose a place that suits you.

  • Bed and Breakfasts can be sweet and intimate. They don’t offer the same privacy and anonymity as a larger hotel, but therein lays their charm. A “B&B” is like a home away from home.
  • Inns are small hotels which are often along the lines of bed and breakfasts, except that the staff is hired in rather than run by the owners themselves. This may be a better option to those couples who enjoy the small “homey” feels of a B&B, but don’t like the owners hovering about.
  • Resorts are a great option for couples who like to be pampered during their stay. Resort accommodations can include romantic amenities which enhance the entire stay! All-inclusive resorts offer a touch of luxury as food and entertainment are included in the flat reservation rate.

Making the Reservation

There are a few tricks to getting the most out of your reservation. Knowing what to ask for is key to differentiating between a random stay and a romantic stay! Many hotels have romantic packages that you can upgrade to for an additional fee. These packages typically include a Jacuzzi tub, champagne, flowers and candy which will be found waiting for you upon arrival.

Find out if they have spa packages as well. Many resorts will send a pair of masseuses up to your room for a couple’s massage.

Packing

Packing can be almost as fun as the trip itself. As you think about all of the wonderful things that you and your loved one are going to do together, you can build the anticipation by stowing away goodies for the trip.

Begin by burning a mixed CD of your special songs to listen to on the way to your hotel (if driving, of course). This is a fantastic way to set the mood right from the start.

Do a little shopping prior to your departure date and pick up scented candles and rose petals for a romantic bath. Lingerie is another treat to enhance your time together!

Checking In

To make your visit extra special, be ready to strike up a friendly conversation with the desk clerk when you check-in. If you weren’t able to snag a romantic package when you made the reservation, this is your chance to still (hopefully) add something special to your room.

Mention to the front desk clerk if you’re celebrating a special occasion and ask if they have any complimentary upgrades available. If a hotel is under-booked, the management will often allow free upgrades as the rooms are going unused. Sometimes an upgrade will include a complimentary bottle of champagne or onsite restaurant vouchers.

*Asking to upgrade to a room with a view is always a nice touch!

Excursions

Take advantage of the area surrounding you! Depending on the type of location that you’re staying at, consider

  • Wine tastings
  • Dinner cruises
  • Picnicking
  • Horseback riding on the beach
  • Guided hiking
  • Bike rentals for a ride in the countryside
  • A day of sailing

Whether trying new things to be adventurous or sticking with tried and true favorites, the key is to play together!

Back to Reality

It always seems like a bit of a letdown once you arrive back home and have to dive into your old routine. It’s almost too easy to forget that romantic getaway, so be sure to take photos and have them printed right away! Each of you can take a framed photo to work to help you get through your days. Here’s a bonus: use your favorite vacation photo as your holiday card the next year.

*On another photo note, take lots of pictures with your cell phone so you can randomly text them to each other down the line. It will be a happy treat for months to come!
