How Long Does It Take To Get A PassportThere are two answers to this question. If you go through the standard passport acquisition process, then it takes around four to six weeks. If you submit your application during the peak travel season, this might take a little longer. Of course, if you are reading this, then you probably are working on a time table.

Expedite The Matter

If you are in a hurry to obtain a passport, you can cut the process time down to about two weeks. This is called "expediting" the passport. To expedite the passport process, you'll need to mark this on the submission form. More importantly, there are several fees you'll need to pay.

You'll need to pay a passport expedition fee and a visa service fee. There are overnight shipping charges you will need to pay, too.

What You Will Need

If you want a passport, you'll need to submit several items with your form. Remember to send everything needed, or the process won't be possible and you'll have to restart the process over. Here are the items you will need.

1. A valid photo identification. If you have a drivers license, this is best. The office in which you process the application will take a picture in office.

2. Two passport photographs. Photography studios in malls and department stores take passport photographs for reasonable prices.

3. A certified birth certificate. Remember when you collect your birth certificate to have it certified, because that's an important part of the process.

4. Collect a passport application and fill it out. You'll find this in the office in which you submit your form.

The Cost

It will cost you about $60 to buy a passport. If you have children, their passports will cost about $40. If you expedite the passport, approximately fifty dollars of fees will be tacked on.

Where You Obtain a Passport

You can obtain a passport at your local post office. Most local court houses also process passports, which is where I've always handled my passport business. Many other government offices have the ability to process your passport.
